Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Mayans. Its maximum splendor was between centuries XII and XV. And still survived 70 years after the arrival of the Spaniards to Mexico. Its original name in the ancestral Mayan language was Zama which means Sunrise. When the place was found in Ruins was named Tulum which means Walled City, for being protected on one side by steep cliffs and the earth side by a wall of 5 meters high and 8 meters wide. Also had 397 meters long, parallel to the sea. ###### SANCTUARY AND COMMERCIAL PORT The Mayans participated in commercial traffic from Central Mexico to Honduras in Central America, sailing along coasts, inlets, rivers, lagoons and estuaries. Their canoes were not resistant to the turbulence of the sea and that is why, they always tried to stay near the coast or in shallow waters as precautionary measures. In commercial terms, Tulum was an important coastal commercial port that linked maritime trade with land. Currently Tulum belongs to the state of Quintana Roo and has a population of 28,600 inhabitants approximately. Its economy is based largely on tourism and Its beaches of white sand and spectacular turquoise blue color are considered among the best in the Riviera Maya and have great international prestige.
