The name of Holbox means in Mayan language Black Hole, It is an island that belongs to the state of Quintana Roo, and it is located on the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Its particular location between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea makes the island a strategic point for the reproduction of marine and coastal fauna. For many centuries this island was a hive of pirates, due to its strategic position that allowed them a safe haven. It was until 1873 when the first European colonizer decided to set up his residence on this Island. During the 80’s Holbox became known as a leisure resort, but it was until the beginning of the 90’s when they started to build small hotels and more people began to arrive to populate the island. The last population census in 2010 registered a population of 1486 inhabitants. Today Holbox is part of the biosphere reserve and protected area of flora and fauna called Yum Balam which means Lord Jaguar. This reserve and protected area was decreed by the Mexican government in 1994. This region is a natural refuge of several species in danger of extinction and observation.
Puerto Aventuras is a private residential development, located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. This beautiful tourist development belongs to the municipality of Solidaridad in the state of Quintana Roo. The community of Puerto Aventuras is divided into two large areas. The Puerto Aventuras complex: A residential and tourist area. And the town of Puerto Aventuras: With houses and apartments of social interest and popular neighborhoods. In the last population census (2010) Puerto Aventuras registered a population of 6,000 inhabitants. It is located 15 minutes from Playa del Carmen and one hour from the international airport of Cancun. Its waters are calm and there are not many tourists since the place was not planned to accommodate many people as in the case of Cancun. This place has one of the largest and most complete marinas in the peninsula, as well as golf courses, tennis courts and activities such as snorkeling, diving, swimming with dolphins and fishing. All these activities are among the most popular to practice in Puerto Aventuras.
The once sleepy village of Playa del Carmen doubled twice in population in the last few years, mainly due to Europeans who discovered the alabaster-white beaches, gentle surf, coral reefs and slow lifestyle were the equal of the more expensive island of Cozumel just across the straits. Playa's dock is the pier for the 'people ferry' to Cozumel, so it's only a short trip over to snorkel or dive on Cozumel's incredible coral reefs. The strong foriegn influence has created a unique vagabond traveler ambiance. Numerous outrageously delicious restaurants provide sustenance and several foreign-owned hotels raise the standards of service to exacting levels. Combine that with a relaxed Mexican-Caribbean feeling and a sprinkling of American free- spirits and you've got Playa. It's definitely not the place to 'get away,' but it is a place to enjoy marvelous beaches by day and a lively nightlife in the evening. The mix of backpackers, archeological buffs and New Age sun worshippers makes Playa very interesting and worth some time. **GETTING AROUND** To get to Playa, 68 km (42 miles) south of Cancun, take a bus from the station downtown (about 1 1/2 hours). If you're in the hotel zone, you could negotiate a fare with a Cancun taxi driver to scoot you down. The main road into town, Av. Juarez or Av. Principal, depending on whom you ask, leads you right to the ferry dock and the pedestrian-only 5th Avenue, running perpendicular to the beach. It boasts many hotels, stores and restaurants. The bus station is right there at Av. 5 and Juarez and is a hub for further journeys down to Tulum, Chetumal and Belize. Many hotels are within easy walking distance from the bus and the street in front of the station is full of men on large yellow tricycles, who will ride you and/or your luggage cheaply to your hotel in a Mexican version of a rickshaw. If your hotel isn't close or you have to go on the back streets of Playa, get a cab right there. In 1994, in response to the growing popularity of the town, the streets were torn up for sewer and water lines. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough money left to repave them. Consequently, many of the new streets look as if the American Air Force has been using them as target practice with 500 lb smart bombs. The water-filled potholes in the unpaved roads outside of the oldest part of town make traffic crawl and require zig-zagging to the max. A stroll on the beach leads to Playa's attractive lighthouse (faro), where you can climb its exterior circular cement staircase to the top. The view is excellent and provides a great photo op.
The City of Cancun is a grand mixture of history and nature coming together to form a perfect getaway setting. A mixture of turquoise blue sea and intricate jungle, joined by some of the finest white sand covering it's beaches makes this truly a paradise to behold. After the ancient Mayas occupied this region, nobody else was interested in it. It was in the early 1960's that Cancun began to take shape revealing its many treasures. The City of Cancun has grown to about 450,000 inhabitants. The City is divided into Downtown Cancun and the Hotel Zone (where most of the tourist hotels are located). Many people flock to the Downtown area to haggle with the merchants in the giant mercados. At night, the Downtown area comes alive with a pleasing offering of nightlife. The Hotel Zone is an island shaped like a "7". It is attached to the mainland via the Punta Nizuc Bridge at the southern tip and the Playa Linda Bridge at the northern tip. The Hotel Zone is where most of the fabulous beach front hotels area located in Cancun as well as a mixture of dining and nightlife spots. Today, Cancun has extended its appeal beyond the local area. When one talks of Cancun, you have to include such places as Isla Mujeres, Contoy, Cozumel, Akumal, Playa del Carmen, Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Tulum, and even Chichen Itza. Cancun and its surrounding areas has all its takes to please even the most discerning traveler, no matter what interests or attractions you are looking for. Come to Cancun . . . Come to Paradise!
